2 yoga mats or large towels
A timer for balance challenges
How to Play
Lay out mats facing each other so you can see your partner. Bare feet, comfortable clothing.
Warm up together: sit cross-legged, take 5 deep breaths. Then 30 seconds each of neck rolls, shoulder shrugs, seated forward folds, and gentle twists.
Take turns being the "pose leader." The leader picks a pose and demonstrates it. The partner copies. Hold for 5 breaths (about 15-20 seconds).
Work through a progression: standing poses (warrior 1, warrior 2, triangle), balance poses (tree, eagle, dancer), floor poses (pigeon, bridge, boat).
Partner poses add a new dimension. Sit back-to-back, press your backs together, and extend your legs. Twist to the right while your partner twists to the left, using each other for leverage. Switch directions.
Balance challenge: both partners hold tree pose simultaneously. Start the timer. Who loses their balance first? Best of three.
Now create a flow. Choose 6-8 poses and arrange them in a sequence that transitions smoothly from one to the next. Write them down.
Practice the full flow 3 times. The first time is figuring it out. The second is getting smoother. The third should feel almost meditative.
Tips
Partner yoga turns an individual practice into a social activity, which makes it more appealing to kids who find solo yoga boring.
Balance challenges are the hook for competitive kids. Timing how long you can hold a one-legged pose is a game, not an exercise, in their minds.
Encourage creativity. There's no wrong answer when designing a flow. If it moves well and feels good, it's a good sequence.
Play calming music during the practice. It sets the mood and helps both partners slow down and breathe.
Yoga builds flexibility, balance, and body awareness that transfer to every other sport. Many professional athletes practice yoga as cross-training.
