- 3Watercolor paint
- 4Wide paintbrush
- 5Cup of water

White crayon or white oil pastel
Watercolor paint in 2-3 colors
Wide paintbrush
Cup of water
Paper towels
How to Play
Choose a short quote, word, or phrase. Something meaningful — a favorite saying, a name, a single powerful word like BRAVE or CREATE or DREAM.
Write the text on watercolor paper using a white crayon or white oil pastel. Press hard for thick, waxy coverage. The text is nearly invisible on white paper.
Add decorative elements around the text if desired — stars, hearts, borders, doodles. All in white.
Mix watercolor paint in two or three harmonious colors — blues and purples, warm sunset tones, or rainbow across the page.
Paint broad washes across the entire paper. Do not worry about painting over the text — that is the point.
As the paint touches the paper, it soaks into the bare areas and rolls off the waxy crayon. The hidden text magically appears in crisp white against the colorful background.
Let the painting dry completely and frame it. The reveal never gets old.
Tips
Press hard with the white crayon. Light, tentative marks will not resist the paint effectively. You need a thick waxy layer.
Oil pastels give a stronger resist than crayons because they contain more wax and oil.
Practice the lettering on scrap paper first. Once the watercolor goes down, you cannot fix the text.
Try gradient washes — start with one color on the left and blend into another on the right for a sunset effect behind the text.
These make incredible gifts and bedroom wall art. A child's own inspirational message in their own handwriting, beautifully painted, has real emotional power.
