Large paper or blank sketchbook

Choose 4-5 new vocabulary words.

Divide paper into sections, one per word.

Write each word LARGE and bold with creative lettering.

Draw a quick meaning sketch for each.

Write a definition in your OWN words.

Add 2-3 synonyms connected with arrows.

Write an original sentence.

Use different colors for different elements.

Sketch notes use the dual coding theory: combining visual and verbal information creates stronger memory traces than either alone. Your child processes the word through writing, drawing, defining, and connecting — four different pathways.

Writing definitions in their own words is crucial. Copying a dictionary definition doesn't require understanding. Paraphrasing does.

The creative lettering element appeals to visual learners and adds an artistic dimension to vocabulary study.

Hang completed sketch note pages on the wall. Passive exposure to vocabulary throughout the day reinforces learning.

This is an excellent study strategy for any subject, not just vocabulary. Sketch notes work for science terms, history concepts, math vocabulary — the technique is transferable.
