How to Play
Draw a timeline line. Start with your child's birthday.
Add milestones: first steps, first school day, trips, new siblings.
Include dates and draw or tape photos.
Discuss spacing: "There's a gap here — what else happened that year?"
Extend backward: parents' birthdays, grandparents' stories.
Add world events for context: "This happened the year you were born."
Roll it up and add new events throughout the year.
Why It Works
Timelines make the abstract concept of time spatial and visual. Your child can see their life laid out in a line, understand that events have sequence and duration, and develop historical thinking — the ability to place events in context. Extending to family and world history shows that their life exists within a much larger story, which builds perspective and curiosity.
Tips
Use consistent scale: 1 inch per year, or 1 foot per year for more detail.
Interview grandparents for family history events. This is a wonderful cross-generational activity.
Include silly milestones too: "Lost first tooth," "First time eating sushi." These make it personal and fun.
Hang the timeline on a wall in a hallway where it can stretch its full length.
For advanced kids, create a dual timeline: personal events on top, world events on the bottom. The visual alignment sparks powerful connections.
