Family Time Capsule Team Project
Create a family time capsule together with letters, drawings, and meaningful objects to open in 5 years — building connection and shared memory.
What You'll Need
- 1Sturdy sealable container (jar, box, or bin)
- 2Paper and pens for letters
- 3Photos and small meaningful items
- 4Tape for sealing
- 5Marker for labeling the date
What You'll Need
A sturdy, sealable container (a mason jar, a shoebox, or a plastic bin)
Paper and pens for writing letters
Photos, small items, and souvenirs to include
Tape for sealing
A permanent marker for labeling the opening date
How to Play
Choose a container and gather around the table with supplies.
Each person writes a letter to their future self: what their life is like now, what they hope for, their predictions.
Collect meaningful items: a current family photo, today's newspaper, a child's drawing, a report card.
Each person writes a sealed letter to every other family member — to be read at opening time.
Decide together: when will you open it? In 1 year? 5 years? At a child's graduation?
Seal the capsule, label it with the date, and store it somewhere safe.
Put the opening date on the calendar and let the anticipation build.
Why It Works
A time capsule is a collaboration between your present selves and your future selves. The letter-writing requires reflection: who am I right now? What matters to me? The letters to family members are acts of love that grow more meaningful with time. The shared decision-making (what to include, when to open) practices cooperation. And the sealed capsule becomes a shared family secret — something everyone knows about and looks forward to together. Opening it years later is one of the most powerful memory-building experiences a family can have.
Tips
Include everyday items, not just special ones. A grocery receipt, a menu from a favorite restaurant, or a printed text conversation captures daily life.
The letters to family members are the most precious part. Encourage genuine, heartfelt writing.
Resist the urge to peek. The sealed wait is what makes the opening transformative.
Take a photo of the family with the sealed capsule. You'll want to recreate that photo on opening day.
