What You'll Need
Thermochromic paint (available online — search for "heat-sensitive paint")
Cardstock or canvas
A bowl of warm water for hand warming
Ice cubes
A paintbrush
How to Play
Paint a thick, even coat of thermochromic paint onto cardstock or canvas.
Let it dry until it's no longer wet but still responds to temperature.
Warm your child's hand (rub together or dip in warm water).
Press firmly onto the painted surface for 5 seconds.
Lift slowly — a color-changing handprint appears where body heat was applied.
Watch it fade back as it cools. Touch it again — the change repeats.
Try ice cubes (creates cold spots), breathing on it (warm patterns), and objects from the fridge.
Tips
Thermochromic paint contains special crystals that rearrange at different temperatures, changing the wavelength of light they reflect.
Warm your hands in different ways and compare: friction (rubbing), water immersion, holding a hot mug. Which creates the strongest color change?
The temporary nature of the prints is part of the magic — they appear and disappear like a science trick.
Try making a "mood wall" — a painted surface your child can press whenever they walk by.
This paint is available in several base colors. Blue-to-green and purple-to-pink are the most dramatic shifts.
