- 2Small lock with combination (optional)
- 3Hiding spots around a room
- 4Timer
- 5Pens and scratch paper for solving
What You'll Need
Paper for creating puzzles and clue cards
A small combination lock (optional — adds excitement)
Various hiding spots around a room
A timer
Pens and scratch paper for the team
How to Play
Design 4-5 connected puzzles. Example: a riddle reveals a hiding spot, which contains a coded message, which gives numbers for a lock.
Set everything up in one room while the team waits outside.
Announce: "You have 30 minutes to solve all the puzzles and escape. You MUST work together."
Start the timer and let them in.
Observe without interfering. Offer ONE hint if they're completely stuck after 10 minutes.
The team searches, solves, debates, and collaborates under time pressure.
Whether they escape or not, debrief: "What worked? Where did communication break down?"
Why It Works
Escape rooms create authentic teamwork pressure. The time limit raises the stakes, forcing the team to communicate efficiently. Some kids naturally take charge, others search methodically, others think creatively — the activity reveals and leverages everyone's strengths. The puzzles require different skills (reading, math, spatial thinking), so no single person can solve everything alone. The debrief is crucial: it teaches kids to reflect on their group dynamics, identify what worked, and think about how to collaborate better next time.
Tips
Start simple: 3 puzzles, 30 minutes. Add complexity as they get better at teamwork.
Include different puzzle types so every kid has a chance to contribute their strength.
If the group has a bossy leader, add a rule: "Every puzzle must be solved by a different person."
Let the kids create the next escape room for you. Designing puzzles for others is a perspective-taking exercise.
