What You'll Need
Air-dry clay
A rolling pin
Textured objects: shells, leaves, lace, buttons, screws, fabric, keys
A plastic knife
Paint and paintbrush
Paper towel
How to Play
Roll clay into a flat slab about half an inch thick.
Gather textured objects and press each one firmly into the clay.
Arrange impressions in a deliberate design — a border of shell prints, a center of lace pattern.
Trim edges with a plastic knife for a clean shape.
Let dry 24-48 hours.
Paint the entire surface one color (metallic gold or silver looks amazing).
While paint is still wet, gently wipe raised areas with a paper towel — this highlights the texture.
Tips
The painting technique (apply then wipe) is called antiquing. It makes the texture dramatically visible.
Challenge your child to close their eyes and identify each impression by touch alone.
Natural objects leave the most interesting impressions. Try pinecones, bark, and feathers.
This project creates art that's designed to be touched — display it somewhere hands can explore it.
Air-dry clay shrinks slightly as it dries, so make the slab a little bigger than the final size you want.
