Supported Standing Bounce Play
Hold your baby upright on your lap and let them push off with their legs in a gentle bouncing motion — a joyful way to build leg strength.
What You'll Need
No materials needed — just you and your baby
How to Play
Find a comfortable seat, either in a sturdy chair or on the floor. Make sure you have good back support since you'll be holding your baby for a few minutes.
Hold your baby upright on your lap with both hands securely under their arms. Their feet should rest on your thighs.
Start with gentle knee bounces to give your baby a soft up-and-down motion. Keep it slow and rhythmic.
As your baby gets comfortable, watch for them to start pushing down with their own legs. This is the reflex you're encouraging — it builds real leg strength.
Add a bouncing song or chant like "bouncy, bouncy, bouncy" to make the rhythm predictable and fun.
Let your baby rest whenever they seem tired or overstimulated. A quick cuddle resets everything.
Try 2-3 short rounds of bouncing per session, about 1-2 minutes each.
Tips
Babies have a natural stepping reflex in the early months. This activity works with that reflex to build strength before they can bear weight independently.
Always support your baby's head and trunk if they don't have full head control yet. Safety first.
Try bouncing to different tempos — slow and gentle, then slightly faster. Notice which rhythm your baby responds to most.
This is a perfect activity for after a nap when your baby is alert and energetic.
If your baby arches their back or fusses, they may be overstimulated. Take a break and try again later.
