Story Dice Adventure Game
Make simple story dice with pictures on each side, roll them, and build a wild story from whatever images land face-up — sparking imagination and narrative skills.
What You'll Need
- 13 small cardboard boxes or wooden blocks
- 2Markers or stickers for pictures
- 3Glue (if using stickers or cutouts)
What You'll Need
3 small cardboard boxes or wooden blocks to use as dice
Markers or stickers for pictures on each face
Glue if using cutout pictures or stickers
How to Play
Make 3 story dice: one for characters, one for settings, one for actions. Draw simple pictures on each face.
Sit together and build excitement: "Let's make the silliest story ever!"
Roll all three dice. Read what lands up: "A robot... in the ocean... eating!"
Start: "Once upon a time, a robot went to the ocean because he was SO hungry..."
Ask: "What happened next?" Build on whatever they say.
Roll again to add a new twist.
Keep building with each roll — the randomness creates hilarious stories.
End dramatically: "And THAT'S how the robot learned to cook underwater. THE END!"
Tips
Story dice solve the "I don't know what to say" problem. The random pictures give your child a starting point, which is all most kids need to let their imagination run wild.
Three dice (character + setting + action) is the perfect structure for preschoolers. It naturally creates a who-where-what framework that mirrors basic story structure.
Write the stories down or record them! You'll create hilarious family stories you can revisit, and your child will love hearing their own words read back.
For younger 3-year-olds, you do 80% of the storytelling and let them fill in details. For older 4-5-year-olds, hand them the lead role.
Make new dice as interests change. Dinosaur dice, space dice, fairy tale dice — the format works for any theme.
Age Adaptation Tips
Preschoolers can follow multi-step instructions. Ask open-ended questions and encourage them to predict what will happen next.
