How to Play
Tell your child you're going on a special hunt — not for things you can see, but for things you can HEAR. Build the excitement.
Start in one room and both close your eyes for 10 seconds. Whisper: "What do you hear?" Give them time to really listen.
Help them identify sounds: the fridge humming, a clock ticking, traffic outside the window, the heater running.
Move to another room and listen again. Each room in your house has its own unique soundscape.
Go outside if the weather allows and listen for birds, wind in trees, distant cars, dogs barking, airplanes overhead.
Try to count how many different sounds you find total. Challenge: "Can we find 10 sounds?"
End by sitting quietly together and listening for the very quietest sound you can possibly detect.
Tips
This builds "active listening" — the skill of intentionally paying attention to sounds rather than letting them wash over you. It's foundational for music appreciation.
Don't rush through rooms. Spending a full minute in silence in each space reveals sounds you'd normally miss.
Let your child lead to rooms they want to explore. The bathroom has great acoustics. The garage has different sounds. Each space is a discovery.
Try this at different times of day. Morning sounds are different from evening sounds. Rainy day sounds are different from sunny day sounds.
After the hunt, try making some of the sounds you heard using your voices or household items. Can you sound like the clock? The bird? The wind?
