A comfortable seat or blanket
How to Play
Find a quiet outdoor spot. Sit comfortably.
Draw an X in the center of the paper — that's you.
Close eyes for one full minute. Let your ears tune in.
When you hear a sound, mark it on the paper in the direction it came from.
Use symbols: a note for bird, zigzag for wind, circle for water, arrow for car.
Continue for ten minutes. Don't talk. Just listen and mark.
Review: how many sounds? Which were closest? Which were farthest? Any surprises?
Tips
Sound mapping is used by ecologists, bird watchers, and landscape architects. It's a real professional tool.
Most people hear 3-5 sounds in the first minute. By minute ten, trained listeners can identify 15-20 distinct sounds.
The first minute with closed eyes is crucial — it takes the auditory system about 60 seconds to fully sharpen when visual input is removed.
Do this in different locations: a city park, a forest, your backyard, near water. The maps look completely different.
Revisit the same spot weekly and compare maps across weeks. Sounds change with seasons, weather, and time of day.
