Soft Chime Sound Tracking Game
Gently ring a chime or bell near your baby and watch them turn toward the sound — a simple activity that builds listening skills and head control.
What You'll Need
- 1Soft chime or small bell (smooth, no small parts)
- 2Soft blanket or play mat
What You'll Need
A soft chime or small bell with a gentle tone (make sure it has no small removable parts)
A soft blanket or play mat
A quiet room so baby can focus on the sound
How to Play
Lay your baby on their back on a soft surface in a quiet room. Minimize background noise so the chime stands out.
Hold a soft-sounding chime or small bell about 12 inches from one side of your baby's head.
Ring the chime gently once and watch for your baby's response — eyes widening, head turning, or body stilling. Any reaction counts.
Wait a few seconds, then ring it again from the same side. Give them plenty of time to locate the sound.
Slowly move the chime to the other side and ring it there. Watch to see if your baby turns to follow.
Try ringing the chime above your baby's head and watch their eyes look upward.
End with the chime near your face so your baby connects the pleasant sound with seeing you smile.
Tips
Choose a chime with a soft, pleasant tone — nothing too sharp or loud. Wind chimes or jingle bells work well.
Keep sessions short. Even 3-4 minutes of focused listening is plenty for a young baby.
If your baby seems startled or upset by the sound, try something softer or hold it farther away.
Narrate what's happening: "Did you hear that? Where did that sound come from?" Even though they can't answer, this builds language exposure.
Try different instruments over time — a wooden rattle, a soft maraca, a tinkling bell — to introduce variety in tones.
