Soap Foam Rain Cloud Experiment
Build a shaving cream cloud on water and drip food coloring through it — the colored rain falls through the cloud just like a real rainstorm.
What You'll Need
- 1Clear jar or tall glass
- 2Water
- 3Shaving cream
- 4Food coloring (blue, purple, green)
- 5Small cups for mixing colors
- 6Droppers or small spoons
What You'll Need
A clear jar or tall glass
Water
Shaving cream
Food coloring (blue, purple, green work best)
Small cups for mixing colors
Droppers or small spoons
How to Play
Fill a clear jar three-quarters full with water.
Spray a thick layer of shaving cream on top — this is your cloud.
Mix food coloring with water in small cups.
Give your child a dropper and let them drip colored water onto the cloud.
Watch carefully — the color soaks into the foam, then breaks through as colored rain.
Keep adding colors. Different colors create different rain streaks inside the jar.
Ask: "Why does the color come through? What happens when the cloud gets too heavy?"
Tips
This is a real analog for how rain works: clouds become saturated with water vapor, and when they can't hold more, rain falls.
Use a clear glass for the best viewing angle. Seeing the rain streaks from the side is the dramatic moment.
More shaving cream = slower rain. Less = faster. Experiment with cloud thickness.
The visual is genuinely beautiful. Slow-falling color streaks through water look almost artistic.
Try warm-colored "rain" (red, orange, yellow) for a sunset storm effect.
Age Adaptation Tips
