How to Play
Draw a hopscotch grid with skip-counting numbers instead of 1-10.
Count by 2s: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20.
"Hop and say the number as you land!"
Hop forward: "Two! Four! Six! Eight!" All the way to 20.
Hop backward: "Twenty! Eighteen! Sixteen!"
New grid for 5s: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25... up to 50.
Challenge: 10s up to 100 — that's a lot of squares!
Why It Works
Skip counting is the gateway to multiplication. When your child can effortlessly count by 2s, 5s, and 10s, multiplication tables become patterns rather than random facts to memorize. Adding the physical act of hopping to each number creates a rhythmic, full-body memory that's far more durable than paper-based drill. It's the same reason we learn the alphabet through a song.
Tips
Count by 2s first — it's the easiest skip count and builds confidence.
Rhythm matters more than speed. A steady hop-and-say rhythm builds automaticity.
Let your child help draw the numbers. Writing them reinforces recognition.
Try it indoors with tape squares on the floor when weather doesn't cooperate.
For advanced kids, try counting by 3s or 4s. These are harder but connect directly to the 3 and 4 times tables.
Age Adaptation Tips
School-age kids can take more ownership. Let them lead the activity, experiment with variations, and explain what they learned.
