Simple Paper Strip Weaving for Kids
Cut slits in paper and weave colorful strips through — an introductory weaving project that teaches patterns and fine motor skills.
What You'll Need
- 1Construction paper (2-3 colors)
- 2Scissors (adult use for prep)
- 3Glue stick or tape
What You'll Need
Construction paper in 2-3 contrasting colors
Scissors (adult prepares the base and strips)
Glue stick or tape
How to Play
Fold a piece of construction paper in half lengthwise. Cut straight slits from the fold toward the open edge, spacing them about an inch apart. Stop about one inch from the edge. Unfold to reveal the weaving base.
Cut strips from contrasting colored paper, about one inch wide and as long as the base is wide.
Show your child the over-under weaving motion with the first strip. Go over the first slit, under the next, over, under, all the way across.
Start the second strip going the opposite way — under first, then over. This creates the woven pattern.
Help your child push each strip snug against the one before it. The tighter the weave, the more satisfying the result.
Continue adding strips until the base is full.
Glue or tape the ends of each strip to hold them in place. Trim any overhang for a neat finish.
Tips
Cut wider slits and thicker strips for younger children. Narrow strips require more precision than two-year-olds typically have.
The over-under pattern is the key concept. If your child skips the pattern and just threads randomly, that is still valuable — they are still practicing the fine motor skill.
Use holiday colors for seasonal decor — red and green for winter, pastels for spring, orange and black for fall.
This is a real textile arts technique. Your child is doing the same thing people have done for thousands of years to make fabric, baskets, and rugs.
Once your child masters paper weaving, try weaving ribbon, fabric strips, or even pipe cleaners through the base for different textures.
