Colored Sand Art Bottle Layering

Fine play sand

Powdered tempera paint or chalk in 5-7 colors

Zip bags for mixing

A clear glass or plastic bottle

A funnel

A thin stick or skewer

A cork or cap

Color sand by mixing it with powdered paint or crushed chalk in zip bags. Shake until even.

Prepare five to seven different colors.

Use a funnel to pour the first color into the bottle.

Tilt the bottle while adding the next color to create angled layers.

Vary layer thickness — thin stripes between thick bands look best.

Use a thin stick to push sand against the glass in spots, creating wave or mountain patterns.

Fill to the very top, pack gently, and seal with a cork.

The pouring and layering process is meditative. Kids often enter a focused flow state.

The tactile experience of running colored sand through a funnel is soothing and ASMR-like.

Thinner funnels allow more precision. A paper cone works if you don't have a small funnel.
