Rainstorm Body Sound Sequence
Build a rainstorm using only body sounds — rubbing palms for wind, snapping for raindrops, clapping for rain, stomping for thunder. A group favorite.
What You'll Need
Nothing at all — just bodies and imagination
Best with 3 or more people for a richer sound
How to Play
Sit in a circle with your family or group and explain: "We're going to create a rainstorm using just our bodies. No instruments!"
Start by rubbing your palms together slowly back and forth. This is the wind beginning to blow. Everyone joins in.
Add finger snapping — these are scattered raindrops starting to fall. Keep the palm rubbing going underneath.
Move to patting your thighs alternately — left, right, left, right. The rain is picking up.
Now clap your hands — it's pouring rain! The sound fills the room.
Add stomping feet — THUNDER! This is the peak of the storm. It's loud and powerful.
Slowly reverse: stop stomping, ease off clapping, slow the patting, return to snapping, back to palm rubbing, and finally... silence. The storm has passed.
Tips
The magic is in the build and the fade. Go slowly through each transition. Rushing ruins the effect.
This works beautifully with just your family, but it's absolutely incredible with a larger group — 10 or more people creating a rainstorm gives you chills.
Kids who can't snap yet can tap their fingers on their opposite palm instead. Same light sound.
Try closing your eyes during the sequence. When you can't see, the sound genuinely feels like rain.
This teaches musical dynamics (crescendo and decrescendo), sequencing, and listening — all in a single, elegant activity that takes five minutes.
