What You'll Need
Poetry books or printed poems (Shel Silverstein, Jack Prelutsky, A.A. Milne)
A cozy performance space
How to Play
Pick poems from the library or online. Each person chooses one.
Give 3-4 days to practice and memorize.
Read through the poem daily. Cover one line at a time to build memory.
On performance night, create a cozy stage area.
Take turns standing, announcing the poem title, and reciting.
Audience snaps or claps after each performance.
Ask: "What did you like? What was your favorite line?"
Celebrate everyone's effort.
Tips
Memorizing poetry builds working memory, rhythm awareness, and vocabulary simultaneously. The patterns in poetry (rhyme, meter, alliteration) wire the brain for reading in ways that prose doesn't.
Start with VERY short poems — 4-8 lines. A child who successfully memorizes a short poem gains confidence. A child who fails at a long one gives up.
Performing in front of family is low-stakes public speaking practice. The skills transfer directly to class presentations, school plays, and beyond.
Make this a monthly tradition. Start a family poetry anthology — write down everyone's poems in a special notebook.
Silly poems are just as valuable as serious ones. Shel Silverstein's humor makes memorization feel like play, not homework.
Age Adaptation Tips
