HAIKU: 5-7-5 syllables, nature theme. Clap syllables. Write one.
LIMERICK: AABBA rhyme, bouncy rhythm. Start with "There once was a ___."
FREE VERSE: no rules, express a feeling or image.
Write one of each type.
Read all three aloud.
Discuss: "Which did you like best? Why?"
Display favorites or start a poetry collection.
Tips
Many kids think they hate poetry because they've only encountered one kind. The sampler approach reveals that poetry includes silly limericks, precise haiku, and open free verse. One of these will click for almost every child.
Haiku teaches syllable awareness and word economy — how to say something meaningful in exactly 17 syllables. It's a puzzle with language.
Limericks teach rhyme, rhythm, and humor in writing. They're also wildly fun to read aloud, which motivates the writing process.
Free verse gives permission to write without rules. For kids who feel constrained by structure, this is liberating. For kids who need structure, haiku or limericks work better.
Start a poetry wall or poetry notebook. Add new poems in various forms over time. By the end of the year, your child will have a genuine poetry portfolio.
