- 2Optional: checklist on paper or phone
What You'll Need
A playground with climbing structures, slides, ladders, and monkey bars
Optional: a checklist on paper or your phone to track challenges
How to Play
Head to a playground and scope out the equipment. Every playground is different, so tailor your challenges to what's available.
Create 5-6 climbing challenges that push your child slightly beyond their comfort zone but are achievable. Write them down or remember them.
Start with an easy win: "Climb the ladder and slide down the slide!" This builds confidence for harder challenges ahead.
Progress to stepping stones, balance beams, or stump steppers: "Cross all the stepping stones without touching the ground!"
Move to a climbing wall or rope net: "Climb all the way to the top!" Stay close and spot, but let them figure out hand and foot placement.
Try the monkey bars: "Hang with both hands for 5 seconds!" Full crossing can come later. Just hanging builds grip strength.
Finish with a crawl challenge: go through every tunnel, crawl space, or gap on the playground.
Check off each challenge together. When all 5-6 are complete, celebrate the full quest with a high five, a fist bump, or a special treat.
Tips
Spot your child by standing close with hands ready, but try not to lift or boost them. The whole point is building the strength and problem-solving to do it themselves.
If your child says "I can't," try reframing: "You can't YET. Let's try the first part." Breaking big challenges into small steps prevents overwhelm.
Let them fail. A child who slides off the monkey bars and tries again is building more resilience than one who never tries.
Match the challenges to your child's ability. A just-turned-3-year-old has very different skills than a 5-year-old. Adjust accordingly.
Return to the same playground regularly with the same challenges. Watching themselves improve over weeks is incredibly motivating for kids.
Age Adaptation Tips
Preschoolers can follow multi-step instructions. Ask open-ended questions and encourage them to predict what will happen next.
