What You'll Need
- 1Assorted safe leaves (non-toxic plants only)
- 2Flower petals (rose, pansy, marigold)
- 3Blanket
What You'll Need
Assorted safe leaves from non-toxic plants
Flower petals — rose, pansy, marigold, or sunflower
A blanket to sit on
How to Play
Before you start, collect five or six different leaves and petals. Aim for texture variety — a smooth magnolia leaf, a fuzzy lamb's ear, a waxy holly leaf, a soft rose petal, a papery birch leaf.
Sit outside with baby in your lap and lay the items on the blanket where baby can see them.
Pick up the first leaf and gently stroke it across baby's open palm. Name what they're feeling — "This one is so smooth. Feel that?"
Offer the next item and let baby grasp it on their own. Younger babies will use a full fist; older babies may pinch with fingers. Both are great.
Compare textures by touching two items in quick succession. "This leaf is rough — but this petal? Silky." The contrast highlights the differences.
Follow baby's interest. If they keep reaching for the fuzzy leaf, let them have it. Repetition is how they learn.
Tips
Only use plants you can identify as non-toxic. When in doubt, leave it out. Common safe options: rose petals, basil leaves, lettuce, mint, lamb's ear.
Wash all items before offering them to baby, especially if they came from a public park.
Babies will mouth these items — that's expected and okay with taste-safe plants. Just supervise to prevent choking on any torn pieces.
This activity pairs naturally with naming colors. Even before baby can say the words, they're absorbing them.
