How to Play
Choose something to argue for: later bedtime, a pet, a trip.
Explain: state what you want, three reasons, and a conclusion.
Brainstorm three reasons with supporting details.
Write the opening: state the request clearly and politely.
Three body paragraphs — one reason each with evidence.
Write a closing that summarizes the argument.
Read aloud: "Is this convincing? Is the tone respectful?"
Present formally. Respond to the argument thoughtfully.
Tips
Persuasive writing is one of the most practical and frequently tested writing skills in school. But more importantly, it teaches your child that their voice has power — that a well-reasoned argument can change someone's mind.
The personal stake (they actually WANT what they're arguing for) provides motivation that no writing prompt can match. Your child will put more effort into this letter than any school essay.
Take the letter seriously. Even if you can't grant the request, respond to the arguments: "Your second reason was really strong because..." This teaches them that reasoned persuasion is valued.
Teach the counter-argument technique: "Some people might say staying up late makes you tired. But I would say..."
Keep these letters. They become wonderful developmental artifacts — and sometimes genuinely convincing arguments.
