Peek-a-Boo Music Box Surprise

A wind-up music box or musical toy (baby-safe, no small removable parts)

A thin cloth or lightweight scarf

Choose a baby-safe music box or wind-up musical toy that plays a gentle melody. Nothing too loud or startling.

Sit on the floor with your baby and wind up the music box so it starts playing. Let your baby watch it with interest.

Let them listen and observe for a few moments. Point to the music box and say "Do you hear the music?"

Slowly place a thin cloth over the music box while it's still playing. The melody continues but the object disappears.

Say "Where did the music go?" with a curious voice and animated expression. Your baby can still hear it — where is it?

Help your baby pull the cloth off to reveal the music box. Celebrate with "You found it! There's the music!"

Repeat several times, each time letting your baby try to uncover it more independently.

This activity works best around 6-10 months when babies are developing object permanence — the understanding that things still exist even when hidden.

Use a thin, see-through scarf at first to make it easier, then progress to an opaque cloth as your baby gets the idea.

If your baby doesn't reach for the cloth, lift a corner yourself to show them the trick. They'll catch on after a few rounds.

Try hiding the music box in slightly different spots each time to keep the challenge fresh.
