Simple Pattern Sequences With Blocks
Arrange colored blocks in repeating AB patterns and let your toddler continue the sequence. An early math activity that teaches prediction and logical thinking.
What You'll Need
- 1Colored blocks in 2-3 colors (6-8 of each)
- 2Flat surface for building patterns
What You'll Need
Colored blocks in 2-3 colors — you'll need 6-8 of each color
A flat surface for building patterns
How to Play
Start a simple AB pattern with blocks: red, blue, red, blue, red, blue.
Say the colors out loud as you point to each: "Red, blue, red, blue..."
Pause and ask: "What comes next? Red or blue?" Hold up both options.
Celebrate the right answer. If they pick wrong, say the pattern together again.
Build 3-4 more AB patterns with different color combinations.
Let your toddler try starting their own pattern. Help them lay the first few pieces.
For older kids, try AAB: red, red, blue, red, red, blue. "What comes next?"
Why It Works
Patterns are the backbone of mathematics. When your toddler predicts what comes next in a red-blue-red-blue sequence, they're using the same cognitive skill that will later power algebra, music reading, and coding. At this age, pattern recognition is emerging — they may not get it every time, but each exposure builds the neural pathways.
Tips
Start with just two colors. Three-color patterns are significantly harder.
Use a rhythmic voice when saying the pattern — the beat helps toddlers anticipate the next element.
If blocks aren't available, use anything with clear color differences: crayons, toy cars, fruit pieces.
Don't worry if your toddler just stacks the blocks instead of patterning. Interest-led play is always valid.
Make patterns with other senses: clap-stomp-clap-stomp is a movement pattern. Same concept, different modality.
