Paper Mache Sensory Bowl Craft
Layer gluey newspaper strips over a balloon to create a unique bowl — the sticky, gooey process is as sensory-rich as the smooth painted result.
What You'll Need
- 1White school glue
- 2Water
- 3Newspaper
- 4Balloon
- 5Bowl (to hold balloon)
- 6Paint and paintbrush
- 7Scissors
What You'll Need
White school glue and water (equal parts for paste)
Newspaper torn into strips
A balloon
A bowl to hold the balloon steady
Paint and a paintbrush
Scissors
How to Play
Mix equal parts glue and water for the paste.
Tear newspaper into 1x6 inch strips — tearing (not cutting) creates better edges for paper mache.
Blow up a balloon and rest it in a bowl.
Dip strips into paste, remove excess, and lay across the top half of the balloon.
Apply 3-4 overlapping layers. Smooth each layer with your fingers.
Let dry completely: 24-48 hours. Don't rush this.
Pop the balloon, trim edges, and paint. Compare the textures: smooth inside, bumpy outside.
Tips
The gooey, sticky process of dipping and smoothing strips is intensely sensory. Don't rush it — the mess is the point.
Three layers minimum for structural strength. Four is better.
Each layer should go in a different direction (horizontal, then vertical) for maximum strength.
Once painted, these bowls are surprisingly sturdy and make great containers for keys, jewelry, or art supplies.
The waiting period teaches patience. Check the bowl daily and notice how the texture changes as it dries.
