What You'll Need
- 1Baby carrier, stroller, or sling
- 2Outdoor area with varied sounds
What You'll Need
A baby carrier, stroller, or sling
An outdoor area with varied sounds — your neighborhood works fine
How to Play
Head outside with baby secured in a carrier, stroller, or your arms. Choose a route with some variety — trees, open areas, near a gentle stream or neighborhood street.
Stop at your first listening spot. Hold very still. Cup your ear dramatically and whisper "Shh — do you hear that?" Baby won't understand the words yet, but they'll feel your stillness and focus.
Name the sound. "That's a bird singing way up in the tree! Can you hear it?" Point in the direction of the sound.
Move to a new spot and repeat. Try to find at least four different sounds — bird song, wind in leaves, a dog barking, a car passing, water trickling.
Watch baby's reactions closely. When they turn their head toward a sound, they're locating it in space — that's a big cognitive step. Pause and let them listen fully.
End at a quiet spot and sit together for a minute, letting the background sounds wash over you both.
Tips
Your exaggerated listening face is the key ingredient. Babies read your expressions before they understand words — when you look fascinated, they tune in.
Parks near water features are gold mines for this activity. Flowing water is endlessly interesting to infant ears.
This works in every season. Winter has crunching snow, spring has bird songs, summer has buzzing insects, fall has rustling leaves.
Repeat favorite stops on future walks. Babies love familiarity — recognizing a sound from last time is a memory milestone.
