Where Did It Go Scarf Game
Hide a favorite toy under a scarf and let your baby find it. This classic peek-a-boo variation builds object permanence — a major cognitive milestone.
What You'll Need
- 1Lightweight scarf or cloth
- 22-3 small baby-safe toys
What You'll Need
A lightweight scarf or cloth (thin enough that baby can pull it off)
2-3 small baby-safe toys your baby enjoys
How to Play
Sit facing your baby on the floor with the toys and scarf.
Place one toy in front of them and let them play with it briefly.
While your baby watches, slowly drape the scarf over the toy. Use an excited voice: "Where did it go?"
Pause. Give your baby a chance to pull the scarf off themselves.
If they don't reach, lift a corner to reveal a peek of the toy. "There it is!"
Celebrate the reveal — clap, smile, use a surprised voice. Your excitement makes this worth repeating.
Do this 3-4 times with one toy, then switch to another to maintain interest.
Why It Works
Object permanence — understanding that things still exist when you can't see them — is one of the biggest cognitive leaps in the first year. Before about 6 months, most babies act as if a hidden toy has vanished. This game helps them build that understanding through joyful repetition.
Tips
Younger babies (4-6 months) will just watch. That's fine — they're learning by observation. By 8-9 months, most babies actively pull the scarf off.
Use a sheer scarf at first so the toy is faintly visible underneath. This scaffolds the concept before hiding it fully.
Try hiding the toy under different things — a bowl, a pillow, behind your back — to generalize the concept.
