Chalk Number Walk and Jump Game
Write numbers on the sidewalk with chalk and have your toddler walk, jump, or stomp on each one as you call it out. Numbers become a full-body outdoor game.
What You'll Need
- 1Sidewalk chalk (multiple colors)
- 2Paved outdoor surface
What You'll Need
Sidewalk chalk in multiple colors
A paved outdoor surface (sidewalk, driveway, patio)
How to Play
Write numbers 1-5 in large, colorful chalk circles, spaced one step apart.
Stand at the start. "This is ONE! Step on one!"
Walk together to each number, naming them as your toddler steps on each.
At the end, count back: "Five, four, three, two, one!"
Call numbers randomly: "Can you find the three? Jump on it!"
Add movement commands: "Tiptoe to two! Stomp on four! Hop to five!"
Extend to 6-10 as confidence grows. Draw a winding path for adventure.
Why It Works
Learning numbers through whole-body movement is vastly more effective than flashcards for toddlers. When your child jumps on a "3," their body, eyes, ears, and voice all engage simultaneously — creating a multisensory memory of that number. The outdoor setting adds space, freedom, and fresh air, which naturally extend attention spans.
Tips
Write numbers large — at least 12 inches across. Toddlers need big targets.
Use different colors for each number to add a visual memory cue.
If your toddler can't recognize numbers yet, that's okay. Just read the number aloud as they step on it. Recognition develops through repeated exposure.
Rainy day? Use masking tape and write numbers on paper taped to the floor indoors.
Add drawings next to numbers — one sun next to 1, two stars next to 2 — to reinforce quantity alongside numeral recognition.
