A set of nesting cups or stacking cups (8-10 pieces)
How to Play
Spread all cups out on the floor, scattered and separated.
Pick up the biggest cup. "This is the biggest one!" Set it down.
Find the next biggest and place it inside. "This one fits inside!"
Hand your toddler a cup and point to one it might fit in. Let them try.
Don't worry about perfect order. The exploration of which fits where is the learning.
Stack the cups into a tower — biggest on bottom, smallest on top. Count them.
Play peek-a-boo: hide a small toy under one cup. Let your toddler lift cups to find it.
Why It Works
Nesting cups are one of the most underrated learning toys. In a single play session, your toddler can practice size comparison (which is bigger?), spatial reasoning (which fits inside?), trial and error (this one doesn't fit — try another), and counting (how many cups in the tower?). The physical feedback is instant — a cup either fits or it doesn't — which teaches through natural consequences rather than correction.
Tips
Let your toddler use the cups in unexpected ways — as hats, drums, sand scoops, bath toys. Every use teaches something.
If your toddler gets frustrated trying to nest them in order, reduce the number of cups. Start with just 3-4.
Water play with nesting cups is wonderful — pouring from big to small teaches volume concepts.
The hiding game works because toddlers this age are solidifying object permanence. The cup-lifting adds a problem-solving layer.
