A stroller or baby carrier
The outdoors — any neighborhood walk will do
How to Play
Put baby in a stroller, carrier, or your arms and head outside.
Start narrating what you see in simple sentences: "I see a big tree. The leaves are green."
Point to things as you name them so baby can follow your gaze and gesture.
Describe what you hear: "Do you hear that bird? Tweet tweet! The bird is singing."
Talk about what you feel: "The wind is blowing. Can you feel it on your cheeks?"
Pause at interesting spots — a flower bed, a puddle, a dog — and give baby time to look while you describe.
Use repetition: "Look, another tree. Tree! Just like the first tree."
Keep sentences short and your voice animated. You're sharing the world together.
Tips
It might feel silly narrating to a baby who can't talk back, but this is one of the highest-impact language activities you can do. Researchers call it a "language bath" — you're immersing baby in the sounds, rhythms, and patterns of speech.
Face-out carriers are great for this because baby can see what you're pointing at. If using a stroller, lean around to make eye contact when you can.
Don't overthink it. You're not teaching a class — just chatting. "Oh look, a red car. It's going fast. Vroom!" is perfect.
Try different routes to expose baby to new vocabulary. The park, a grocery store, a farmer's market — every environment is a new word bank.
