- 2Maraca or shaker
- 3Xylophone or bells
- 4Timer or phone stopwatch
- 5Signs or labels for each station
What You'll Need
A drum or pot for one station
A maraca or shaker for another
A xylophone or bells for a third
A timer or phone stopwatch
Simple signs or labels for each station
How to Play
Set up 5-6 stations around the room or yard, each with a different musical challenge and a small sign explaining what to do.
Station 1: Bang a drum 5 times. Station 2: Shake a maraca while running in place for 10 seconds.
Station 3: Sing the first line of "Happy Birthday" loud and clear. Station 4: Do 5 jumping jacks while clapping overhead.
Station 5: Play 3 notes on a xylophone. Station 6: Freeze in a statue pose and hold it for 5 seconds.
Walk through the course once slowly so your child learns what happens at each station.
Say "Ready, set, GO!" and time them running through the full course. Write down their time.
Run it again and try to beat their personal best. Rearrange stations or add new challenges for round three.
Tips
The combination of physical movement AND musical tasks makes this more cognitively demanding than a regular obstacle course. Transitioning between running and playing an instrument requires rapid task-switching.
For multiple kids, stagger their starts by 30 seconds so they're not waiting at the same station.
Include one station that requires a partner: "High-five someone and sing a note together." This adds a social element.
Change the musical tasks each time you play to keep it fresh. New stations = new challenges.
This is a phenomenal birthday party activity. Set it up once and kids will run it repeatedly, trying to beat each other's times.
Age Adaptation Tips
School-age kids can take more ownership. Let them lead the activity, experiment with variations, and explain what they learned.
