What You'll Need
A phone or speaker for playing music
Paper and pencil for making a rating sheet
Optional: snacks to make it feel like a real party
How to Play
Prepare 6-8 short clips (1-2 minutes each) from distinctly different music genres: jazz, rock, classical, hip-hop, country, reggae, electronic, folk.
Make a simple rating sheet with the genre names listed and space for 1-5 stars next to each.
Play the first clip — maybe jazz. Ask your child to close their eyes and just listen. Notice the instruments, the tempo, the feeling.
After the clip, discuss: "What did you notice? Was it fast or slow? Happy or moody? Did you want to move?" Then rate it 1-5 stars.
Play the next genre and repeat. Keep the discussion flowing — every genre has something interesting about it.
After all clips, compare ratings. "Your favorite was hip-hop with 5 stars! Classical got 3 stars."
Play the top-rated genre again for a victory dance or extended listening session.
Tips
Choose iconic, kid-friendly examples: Miles Davis for jazz, Beatles for rock, Bach for classical, a clean hip-hop track, Johnny Cash for country.
You might be surprised by what your child gravitates toward. Many kids love jazz or classical when they actually hear it rather than just hearing about it.
Avoid leading their opinions. Don't say "This next one is really cool" — let them form their own reactions.
This builds musical vocabulary: tempo, beat, instruments, lyrics, melody. Name these elements as you discuss each genre.
Make it a recurring event — Musical Listening Party once a month with new genres: blues, ska, gospel, Celtic, Afrobeat. The world of music is vast.
Age Adaptation Tips
