Music Video Creation at Home
Plan, film, and star in a homemade music video for a favorite song — choose costumes, locations, choreography, and camera angles. Your child is the director.
What You'll Need
- 1Phone or tablet for filming
- 2Speaker for playing the song
- 3Costumes or dress-up clothes (optional)
- 4Props as needed for the creative vision
What You'll Need
A phone or tablet for filming
A speaker for playing the chosen song
Costumes or dress-up clothes (optional but elevating)
Any props that support the creative vision
How to Play
Choose a song for the music video. Let your child pick — this is their creative vision from start to finish.
Plan the video together: Where will you film different parts? What costumes or outfits? Is there a story or theme?
Choose 2-3 locations in and around the house for different scenes. The kitchen for one verse, the backyard for the chorus, the bedroom for the bridge.
Create simple choreography or signature moves for the chorus — something you can repeat each time it comes around.
Film each scene. Let your child direct: "Stand over there, do the dance move when the chorus starts, and then walk this way."
For the chorus, film from different angles if you can. One wide shot, one close-up.
Watch all the clips together. Celebrate the finished production. That's a music video!
Tips
This activity combines so many skills: planning (executive function), directing (leadership), performing (confidence), choreography (motor planning), and storytelling (narrative).
Film more than you think you'll need. Kids rarely get it in one take, and multiple takes are what real music videos involve anyway.
Your child should genuinely direct. Ask them: "Where should the camera be? What should I do during this part?" Give them creative control.
Simple editing apps (iMovie, CapCut) let you piece clips together with the song playing. Even unedited footage played sequentially is exciting.
Watch it together on the TV for the "premiere." Make popcorn. Dim the lights. Make it an event.
Age Adaptation Tips
School-age kids can take more ownership. Let them lead the activity, experiment with variations, and explain what they learned.
