Multiplication Arrays With Sticker Art
Arrange stickers in rows and columns to see what multiplication looks like. 3 rows of 4 equals 12 — it's not just a fact, it's a picture you can count.
What You'll Need
- 1Graph paper
- 2Small dot stickers (multiple colors)
- 3Pencil
- 4Ruler (optional)
What You'll Need
Graph paper (grid lines help keep rows neat)
Small dot stickers in multiple colors
Pencil for writing equations
Ruler (optional)
How to Play
Write "3 x 4" on graph paper. "This means 3 rows of 4."
Place 4 stickers in a row. Another row of 4 below. A third row of 4.
"Count all the stickers!" Together: 12. Write: 3 x 4 = 12.
Try 2 x 5: "2 rows of 5." Count. Write the equation.
Build 5-6 different arrays.
Discover: "3 x 4 and 4 x 3 both make 12! Same stickers, different shape!"
Challenge: "What's the biggest array that fits on one page?"
Why It Works
Arrays are the visual model for multiplication, and stickers make them tactile. When your child builds a 3x4 array and counts 12, they're seeing that multiplication is repeated addition (4+4+4=12) and that the commutative property works (3x4 = 4x3). These aren't abstract rules — they're patterns your child discovers through their own hands.
Tips
Graph paper is key. It keeps rows and columns aligned so the array is visually clear.
Use different colored stickers for each row to make the grouping visible.
Start small: 2x2, 2x3, 3x3. Build up to larger arrays.
Post completed arrays on the wall as a reference. Visual math facts stick better than flash cards.
For kids who already know basic multiplication, try skip counting the rows: "Each row has 4. Count by 4s: 4, 8, 12!"
Age Adaptation Tips
School-age kids can take more ownership. Let them lead the activity, experiment with variations, and explain what they learned.
