Maraca Shake and Walk Parade
Give your toddler a maraca or homemade shaker and parade around the house while shaking to a beat — a moving music adventure that builds walking confidence.
What You'll Need
- 12 maracas or egg shakers (or homemade shakers)
- 2Optional: music playing on a portable speaker
What You'll Need
2 maracas, egg shakers, or homemade shakers (one for each of you)
Optional: music playing on a portable speaker to march along to
How to Play
Give your toddler a maraca, egg shaker, or homemade shaker to hold. Let them shake it a few times to hear the sound.
Start shaking your own shaker in a steady walking rhythm: shake, shake, shake, shake.
Begin walking slowly around the room while shaking and encourage your toddler to follow your lead.
Sing a marching song like "The Ants Go Marching" as you parade together through the room.
Stop suddenly, freeze your shaker, and whisper "Shhh! Quiet!" Then start again loudly. The contrast delights toddlers.
Walk to different rooms of the house, making it a grand musical parade tour. Each room is a new stage.
End back where you started and shake your maracas overhead for a big finish. Take a bow!
Tips
This is perfect for new walkers (12-15 months) because it gives them a purpose for walking. Having something to hold actually helps with balance.
If you don't have maracas, make quick shakers from sealed containers with dried beans inside. Or just crinkle a piece of paper rhythmically.
Vary your speed: march slowly like elephants, then fast like mice. Changing tempo challenges your toddler to adjust.
Take the parade outdoors on nice days. Shaking maracas down the sidewalk is a whole different experience.
Invite siblings, the other parent, or stuffed animals to join the parade. The more the merrier.
