What You'll Need
A standard piece of paper
Pencil for writing
Crayons or markers for illustrations
Scissors for one small cut in the fold
How to Play
Fold paper into an 8-page mini book using the "one sheet" fold method.
Plan the story: character, problem, ending.
Assign pages: cover, 5 story pages, ending, About the Author.
Write one or two sentences per page.
Draw an illustration on each page.
Write "The End" on the last story page.
Add "About the Author" with a fun fact on the back.
Read the finished book aloud to anyone who will listen.
Tips
There's something powerful about holding a physical book YOU wrote. It transforms a child from a reader into an AUTHOR. That identity shift changes their relationship with writing forever.
The mini format keeps the writing load manageable. Five pages of one sentence each is about 5-10 sentences total — achievable without overwhelm.
Don't edit during the process. Let the first draft be messy, creative, and free. Editing kills creative flow for young writers.
Start a home "library" of their books. When friends or family visit, your child can "check out" books to them. The pride is immeasurable.
Make books about everything: a trip to the zoo, a favorite pet, an adventure dream, a how-to guide for their favorite game. Every topic is book-worthy.
Age Adaptation Tips
School-age kids can take more ownership. Let them lead the activity, experiment with variations, and explain what they learned.
