Laundry Basket Push and Ride
Give your toddler a ride in a laundry basket or let them push it across the room — a household item turned into gross motor play.
What You'll Need
- 1Sturdy laundry basket (low-sided)
- 2Stuffed animal (optional)
What You'll Need
A sturdy, low-sided laundry basket
A stuffed animal or doll (optional passenger)
How to Play
Set a sturdy laundry basket on a smooth floor. The basket should be low enough that your toddler can climb in and out without too much struggle.
Invite your toddler to climb into the basket. Let them figure out how to get in — stepping over the side is great motor planning practice.
Once they're seated inside, push the basket slowly across the floor. Say "Ready? Here we go!" and then give a smooth push.
Use stop-and-go play to build anticipation. Push, pause, say "One... two... three!" then push again. Toddlers love the suspense.
Now switch roles. Take your toddler out of the basket and let them push the empty basket across the room. Walking while pushing something heavy is excellent for balance and leg strength.
Put a stuffed animal in the basket and let your toddler push their "passenger" around. They'll feel big and important.
Let your toddler practice climbing in and out of the basket repeatedly. Each time they step over the side, they're building balance, coordination, and confidence.
Tips
Make sure the basket won't crack or collapse. Test it with your own weight first — a broken basket edge is sharp and dangerous.
Smooth floors work best for pushing. Carpet creates too much resistance for small pushers.
If the basket slides too easily on hard floors, place a towel underneath for a bit of friction. You want some resistance — that's what builds strength.
This is a perfect rainy day activity. Your toddler gets genuine physical exercise without needing any outdoor space.
Try adding a blanket inside the basket for comfort during the ride portion. Some toddlers will turn this into a cozy reading nook between pushes.
