Fill in the Word Song
Sing familiar songs but pause before the last word of each line, letting your toddler fill in the blank — a playful way to practice recall and expression.
What You'll Need
No materials needed — just songs you and your toddler already know
How to Play
Choose a song your toddler knows well: "Twinkle Twinkle," "Old MacDonald," or "Wheels on the Bus."
Start singing at a moderate pace, making eye contact.
Pause before the last word: "Twinkle, twinkle, little..."
Look at your toddler expectantly. Wait 5-10 seconds.
If they say the word, celebrate: "STAR! Yes! Great singing!"
If they don't, say it yourself with a smile. No pressure.
Try again on the next line: "How I wonder what you..."
As toddler improves, pause earlier in lines for more fill-in opportunities.
Tips
This technique (called a "cloze" procedure) works because your toddler's brain has already memorized the song through repetition. When you pause, their brain automatically activates the missing word. You're giving them a chance to say it out loud.
Start with songs you've sung hundreds of times. The more familiar, the more likely they'll fill in the blank.
Any approximation counts. If "star" comes out as "tah" — that's a win. They know the word; their mouth is still catching up.
This works in the car, in the bath, while walking — anywhere. It's one of the most portable language activities you can do.
Try it with favorite books too. Read a familiar line and pause before the last word.
Age Adaptation Tips
Toddlers learn through repetition. Keep it simple, expect mess, and let them explore at their own pace. Demonstrate first, then let them try.
