Emotion Body Freeze Dance Game
Dance freely to music and freeze into an emotion pose when it stops — a whole-body way to learn about feelings and self-expression.
What You'll Need
- 1Music player or phone with music
- 2Open space for dancing
What You'll Need
A phone or speaker with music
An open space for dancing (living room floor works great)
How to Play
Clear some space and put on fun, upbeat music.
Dance with your child — be silly, wiggle, jump, sway. Anything goes.
Stop the music and call out an emotion: "Freeze! Show me a happy body!"
Model the pose — arms up high, big grin, bouncy stance — and let them copy.
Hit play and dance again.
Stop the music: "Freeze! Show me a sad body!" Slump shoulders, frown, hang head.
Keep alternating between 3-4 emotions. When your child is ready, let them call the emotions too.
Why It Works
This game teaches emotions through the whole body, not just the face. When your child strikes a "scared" pose — hunched, arms crossed, wide eyes — they're learning that emotions live in the body, not just the brain. The freeze element adds impulse control (stopping mid-dance is hard!) and the dancing burns energy. It's a clever way to combine emotional learning, physical activity, and self-control in one joyful package.
Tips
Start with just happy and sad. Add mad, scared, surprised, and silly as they get the hang of it.
Accept any interpretation of the emotion. There's no wrong way to show "happy body."
Play this with siblings or at playdates. Kids love seeing how others interpret the same emotion differently.
Use it as a regulation tool later: "I see your body looks angry. Can you show me a calm body?"
