What You'll Need
Plain yogurt (about 1 cup per color)
Food coloring (gel food coloring gives brighter colors)
Large paper, paper plates, or a high chair tray
Plastic placemat or garbage bag for easy cleanup
Smock or old t-shirt
How to Make the Paint
Scoop about 1/4 cup of yogurt into small bowls — one for each color.
Add 2-3 drops of food coloring to each bowl.
Stir until the color is mixed through.
That's it — your paint is ready!
Setting Up for Play
Put a smock or old shirt on your toddler.
Tape paper to the high chair tray, or use the tray directly as a canvas.
Put a few spoonfuls of each color on the paper.
Let your toddler explore with their hands and fingers.
Show them how to smear, dot, and swirl the colors together.
Tips
This paint is completely taste-safe, so don't worry if your toddler licks their fingers. It's made from yogurt, so it's actually a snack and an art project in one.
For brighter colors, use gel food coloring instead of liquid. You'll need fewer drops and the colors won't water down the yogurt.
Try offering just 2 colors at first. Too many colors at once can be overwhelming — and they'll all mix to brown pretty quickly.
Lay a plastic tablecloth or old shower curtain under the high chair for easy cleanup.
This activity is great for developing hand-eye coordination, color exploration, and sensory processing. The cold, squishy texture of yogurt is a totally different experience from regular paint.
Take a photo of the artwork before it dries — yogurt paint doesn't preserve well, but the memory is worth capturing!
Age Adaptation Tips
Toddlers learn through repetition. Keep it simple, expect mess, and let them explore at their own pace. Demonstrate first, then let them try.
