Dodgeball Variations and Strategy Game
Play advanced dodgeball variations — Doctor Dodgeball, Pin Guard, and Medic — adding strategy and teamwork to the classic throwing game.
What You'll Need
- 13-4 soft foam balls
- 2Cones for boundaries
- 3Bowling pin or water bottle (for Pin Guard)
- 4Flat outdoor area
What You'll Need
3-4 soft foam balls (never hard balls)
Cones for field boundaries and center line
A bowling pin or tall water bottle for the Pin Guard variation
A flat outdoor area
How to Play
Set up the field: a rectangle about 30 feet wide and 40 feet long with a center line. Place all foam balls on the center line.
Standard rules apply to all variations: throws must be below the shoulders. Headshots mean the thrower is out. If you catch a ball, the thrower is out and one of your teammates comes back in.
Doctor Dodgeball: before the round, each team huddles and secretly chooses one player as the "doctor." Play normal dodgeball, but when hit, you sit down where you are. The doctor walks over and taps your shoulder — you're back in. If the doctor gets hit, the team can no longer heal. The other team doesn't know who the doctor is, which creates suspense.
Pin Guard: each team places a bowling pin (or tall water bottle) about 5 feet behind their back line. Normal dodgeball rules, but you can ALSO win by knocking down the other team's pin with a thrown ball. Teams must balance offense (throwing at the pin) with defense (protecting it).
Medic Dodgeball: each team picks a "medic" who wears a visible bandana. When hit, players lie down. The medic drags them by the ankles to a "hospital zone" behind the back line, where they can rejoin. The medic can't be hit while actively rescuing.
Play each variation for 5-10 minutes. Vote on the favorite and play a championship round of that version.
Tips
These variations transform dodgeball from a simple throwing game into a strategic team sport. Doctor and Medic versions reward teamwork and deception.
Foam balls are the non-negotiable safety requirement. Never use rubber or leather balls. Foam eliminates the fear of getting hit, which lets players focus on strategy.
The Doctor variation teaches deception and observation. "Who's the doctor?" becomes a strategic puzzle for the opposing team.
Pin Guard is the most balanced variation because there are two ways to win. Even a team with weaker throwers can win by protecting their pin while sneaking shots at the opponent's.
Rotate roles every game. Everyone should get a turn being doctor, medic, or pin guard. Different roles develop different skills.
