A list of debate topics
How to Play
Choose a topic: "Should homework be banned?" or "Are cats better pets than dogs?"
Assign sides: FOR and AGAINST. Argue the assigned position, not your belief.
10 minutes of prep: write 3 main points with supporting reasons.
Rules: 2 minutes for opening, 1 minute for rebuttal.
Timer enforced. After openings, each side responds.
Audience votes on most persuasive argument.
Debrief: strongest argument on each side? Mind changed?
Why It Works
Debate develops critical thinking, organized argumentation, active listening, public speaking, and the ability to consider perspectives different from your own. Arguing an assigned side (rather than your personal opinion) is especially powerful because it forces perspective-taking — the ability to construct a case for something you might not agree with, which is a cornerstone of intellectual maturity.
Tips
Start with fun, low-stakes topics: cats vs. dogs, pizza vs. tacos, summer vs. winter. Save serious topics for when the format is comfortable.
The rebuttal round is where real critical thinking happens. Responding to someone else's argument on the spot is hard and valuable.
Model good debate behavior: listen while the other side speaks, respond to their actual points (not a strawman), stay respectful.
Vote on quality of argument, not personal agreement. This teaches that persuasion is a skill.
Keep a running list of debate topics. Family debate night can become a weekly tradition.
