What You'll Need
Sturdy cardboard (about 12 by 12 inches)
Wide ribbon in various textures and colors
Crinkly fabric or tissue paper sealed inside clear contact paper
Strong tape (packing tape works great)
How to Play
Cut a piece of sturdy cardboard as your base. Double up layers for extra strength.
Cut short lengths of wide ribbon — about 4 to 6 inches each — in different textures and colors. Satin, grosgrain, and velvet give nice variety.
Loop each ribbon and tape both ends firmly to the back of the board so the loops stick up from the front. Space them a few inches apart.
Add patches of crinkly material. Seal tissue paper between two pieces of clear contact paper, then tape flat to the board.
Hold the board in front of your baby while they are seated in a bouncer or reclined on your lap. Let them reach for the ribbons.
Encourage pulling, grabbing, and crinkling. Say things like "You grabbed the blue one! Hear that crinkly sound?"
Always supervise closely. Remove the board when playtime is over — this is not a leave-alone toy.
Tips
Make sure all ribbons are short loops, not long dangly pieces. Nothing should be long enough to wrap around fingers or neck.
Seal any crinkly paper completely inside contact paper so no small pieces can come loose.
This board can grow with your baby. Add new elements every few weeks as their grasping skills improve.
Hang it on the wall next to the changing table for a quick distraction during diaper changes.
Try different ribbon widths — wider ribbons are easier for tiny hands to grab at first.
