How to Play
Choose a calm moment — diaper changes, after a bath, or during floor time work beautifully.
Take one of your baby's feet gently in your hand and wiggle the big toe. Say "One!" in a bright, sing-song voice.
Move to the next toe. "Two!" Give it a gentle squeeze or wiggle.
Continue through all five toes, counting each one with a touch and a word.
Switch to the other foot and count again from one to five.
Now try the fingers. Hold your baby's hand open and gently touch each finger as you count.
Finish with a big "Ten little fingers!" or "Ten little toes!" and a smile.
Why It Works
Babies learn through repetition and sensory pairing. When you touch a toe and say a number, you're linking a physical sensation with a word — and that's the earliest seed of number sense. Your baby won't understand counting yet, but they're absorbing the rhythm and cadence of number words, which matters more than you'd think.
Tips
Make it part of your diaper-change routine so it happens naturally every day. Consistency is what builds familiarity.
Vary your voice — try whispering, singing, or using a silly voice to keep your baby's attention.
This works great as a calming activity if your baby is fussy during a diaper change. The gentle touch and rhythmic counting can be surprisingly soothing.
As your baby gets older (4-6 months), they may start reaching for their own toes. Celebrate it — that's body awareness developing in real time.
