- 2Objects around the house (no special items needed)
What You'll Need
A basket or bag for collecting objects
Just the objects already in your home — no special items needed
How to Play
Choose one color to hunt for. Red, blue, or yellow are great starting choices.
Hold up a sample object in that color: "Today we're looking for RED things!"
Walk through the house together. Point to matching objects: "The ketchup bottle is red!"
Ask your toddler: "Can you find something red?" Give them time to scan the room.
Celebrate each find. Touch it together and name it: "You found it! The pillow is red!"
Collect small, safe objects in a basket as you go.
At the end, count everything in the basket together.
Why It Works
Color recognition is one of those skills that develops through immersion, not drill. When your toddler walks through the house looking for blue things, they're seeing "blue" in dozens of contexts — a blue cup, a blue shirt, a blue book — and that variety is what builds a robust color concept. The movement keeps them engaged far longer than a flashcard ever could.
Tips
Do one color at a time. Hunting for multiple colors simultaneously overwhelms young toddlers.
Start in rooms with lots of objects (kitchen, playroom) so early finds come quickly and build momentum.
If your toddler picks up a wrong-colored object, just say "That one is green! We're looking for red — can you find a red one?" No need to make it a correction.
Take the hunt outside once you've done the house. Nature has surprising colors.
For older toddlers, try shades: "Can you find something light blue AND something dark blue?"
Age Adaptation Tips
Toddlers learn through repetition. Keep it simple, expect mess, and let them explore at their own pace. Demonstrate first, then let them try.
