- 2Clothespins or large craft sticks
- 3Colored markers or dot stickers
What You'll Need
4-5 colored plastic cups (or white cups wrapped in colored paper)
Clothespins or large craft sticks
Colored markers or dot stickers to mark the clothespins
How to Play
Mark each clothespin with a colored dot matching one of the cups.
Line the cups up on a table or the floor within your toddler's reach.
Hold up a clothespin and name the color: "This one is red! Where's the red cup?"
Help your toddler drop the clothespin into the matching cup. Celebrate every match.
Hand them the next one. Point to the matching cup if they need a visual hint.
Once all clothespins are sorted, dump them out and play again.
Add more colors as your toddler masters the original set.
Why It Works
Color matching is one of the first classification skills toddlers develop. By physically placing a colored object into a matching container, your child connects the abstract concept of "same" with a concrete action. The dropping motion also practices the controlled release that's essential for fine motor development.
Tips
Start with just 2-3 colors. Too many choices overwhelm toddlers. Add more as they get confident.
Use high-contrast colors first — red, blue, yellow are easier to distinguish than, say, green and teal.
If clothespins are too hard to grasp, use pom poms or large buttons instead.
Name the color every single time, even if it feels repetitive. That repetition is exactly how toddlers learn color words.
