Outdoor Color Hunt for Toddlers
Search the yard or park for natural items matching each color — green leaves, brown sticks, red berries, yellow flowers — a nature-based color game.
What You'll Need
- 1Outdoor space with natural variety
- 2Small bag or container for collecting
What You'll Need
An outdoor space with natural variety — a yard, park, garden, or trail
A small bag or container for collecting finds
How to Play
Start with the easiest color: green. "Let's find something green outside! Look around — can you spot green?"
Walk slowly through the yard or park, searching together. Your toddler will start pointing at everything green once they lock in.
Celebrate each find. "You found green grass! And a green leaf! What else is green?" Keep the energy up.
Collect small items when you can — a leaf, a petal, a little pebble — and place them in your bag.
Move through colors one at a time: green, brown, yellow, red, white, orange. Save blue for last — it's the trickiest. "Can you find anything blue in nature?" (Sky counts!)
Lay out all your collected items sorted by color. Step back and admire the nature rainbow you built together.
Tips
Start with two or three colors for younger toddlers. Add more as their color recognition grows.
If your child gets stuck on a color, give a hint. "I think I see something yellow near that fence..." Let them make the final spot.
This works in every season, but each season offers different colors. Fall is the champion — red, orange, yellow, brown everywhere.
Bring the color collection inside and glue it to paper for a nature color collage. It extends the activity and creates a keepsake.
