Capture the Flag Classic Outdoor Game
Divide into two teams, hide a flag in each territory, and race to capture the other team's flag without getting tagged. A timeless outdoor game.
What You'll Need
- 1Two bandanas or bright cloths (flags)
- 2Cones or sticks (for boundary line)
- 3Large open outdoor space
What You'll Need
Two brightly colored bandanas, cloths, or socks to serve as flags
Cones, sticks, or chalk to mark the boundary line
A large open outdoor space — the bigger the better
At least 4 players (2 per team minimum, more is better)
How to Play
Mark a clear center line dividing the playing field in half. Each half is one team's territory.
Form two teams. Give each team a flag.
Each team has 2 minutes to hide their flag somewhere in their territory. It must be somewhat visible — tucked behind a tree is fine, buried under leaves is not.
On "go," both teams try to sneak or sprint into enemy territory, find the flag, and carry it back to their own side.
If you get tagged in enemy territory, go to that team's jail (a marked spot). Stand there until a teammate tags you free.
Freeing a teammate from jail is risky — you might get tagged too. Strategy matters: do you go for the flag or rescue a teammate first?
The round ends when one team successfully brings the other team's flag across the center line into their own territory.
Play best of three rounds. Switch sides between rounds and re-hide flags.
Between rounds, each team huddles to discuss strategy. Should someone guard the flag? Should everyone rush at once?
After the final round, come together and share what strategies worked.
Tips
For younger kids (5-6), shrink the playing field. A massive space means too much running and not enough action. A smaller field keeps the game fast and exciting.
Assign one or two defenders per team to guard the flag area. Without guards, the game often ends in seconds. With guards, strategy emerges.
If someone gets frustrated after being tagged or jailed, remind them that getting caught is part of the game — even the best players get tagged. The fun is in trying again.
For mixed ages, give younger players a 3-second head start before they can be tagged. It keeps the game fair and fun for everyone.
Play at dusk with glow sticks as flags for an unforgettable variation. Each player can also wear a glow bracelet so you can see them moving in the fading light.
Age Adaptation Tips
School-age kids can take more ownership. Let them lead the activity, experiment with variations, and explain what they learned.
