Bug Spotting Garden Walk
Walk slowly through the garden with your toddler, crouching down to look for ants, beetles, worms, and other little creatures hiding in the plants.
What You'll Need
- 1Garden or area with ground cover
- 2Comfortable clothes for crouching
What You'll Need
A garden, flower bed, or park area with ground cover and plants
Comfortable clothes for crouching and kneeling
How to Play
Head to a garden or park area with plants, rocks, and ground cover. Bugs live where there's moisture, shade, and organic material.
Crouch down to your toddler's eye level. Their world is closer to the ground — that's actually the perfect vantage point for bug spotting.
Gently lift a rock, a large leaf, or a piece of bark. Look underneath together. "Oh! See that? A roly-poly bug! It's curling up into a ball."
Find an ant trail and follow it. Where are they coming from? Where are they headed? "Those ants are so busy. They're carrying food back to their home underground."
Check plant stems and the undersides of leaves for caterpillars, ladybugs, or tiny spiders. Point without touching — gentle observation is the skill here.
Keep a running count. "We found three ants, a worm, and one beetle. That's five bugs! Can we find one more?"
Tips
Model gentle behavior around bugs. If your toddler wants to grab, redirect: "We look with our eyes and point with our fingers. We don't want to hurt them."
After rain is the best time for bug spotting. Worms come to the surface, slugs appear, and beetles are active.
If you're uncomfortable with bugs, this is your chance to practice being curious instead of squeamish. Your toddler takes cues from your reaction.
A cheap magnifying glass adds magic to this activity for older toddlers — suddenly every ant has visible legs and antennae.
Age Adaptation Tips
Toddlers learn through repetition. Keep it simple, expect mess, and let them explore at their own pace. Demonstrate first, then let them try.
